WATCHWORD

Jesus spoke to the disciples and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Matthew 14:27

SONG Beautiful One

Wonderful, so wonderful is Your unfailing love
Your cross has spoken mercy over me
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart could fully know
How glorious, how beautiful You are

Beautiful One I love, beautiful One I adore
Beautiful One my soul must sing

Powerful, so powerful, Your glory fills the skies
Your mighty works displayed for all to see
The beauty of Your majesty awakes my heart to sing
How marvelous, how wonderful you are

Beautiful One I love, beautiful One I adore
Beautiful One my soul must sing

You opened my eyes to Your wonders anew
You captured my heart with this love

Cause nothing on earth is as beautiful as you

You opened my eyes to Your wonders anew
You captured my heart with this love

Cause nothing on earth is as beautiful as you

Beautiful One I love, beautiful One I adore
Beautiful One my soul must sing

Beautiful One I love, beautiful One I adore
Beautiful One my soul must sing

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, +one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen.

Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

Reconciling God,

We confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny your presence in our lives. We place our hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought, word and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through +Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope, for hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

READING Romans 10:5-15

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SONG Never Once

Standing on this mountaintop, looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step - You were with us
Kneeling on this battle ground, seeing just how much You’ve done
Knowing every victory – was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way, but with joy our hearts can say, yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone, never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful, You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Standing on this mountaintop, looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step – You were with us

Scars and struggles on the way, but with joy our hearts can say, yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone, never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful, You are faithful, God, You are faithful

You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-33

Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ.

SONG Like a Child

Dear God, surround me as I speak,
Bridges that I walk across are weak
The frustrations fill the void that I can’t solely bear
Dear God, don’t let me fall apart, You’ve held me close to you
But I have turned away and searched for answers I can’t understand

They say that I can move the mountains
And send them falling to the sea
They say that I can walk on water
If I would follow and believe
With faith like a child

Sometimes, when I feel miles away
And my eyes can’t see your face
Well I wonder if I’ve grown to lose the recklessness I walked in light of you

They say that I can move the mountains
And send them falling to the sea
They say that I can walk on water
If I would follow and believe
With faith like a child

They say that I can move the mountains and send them crashing to the sea
They say that I can walk on water if I would follow and believe
They say that love can heal the broken, they say that hope can make you see
They say that faith can find a Savior if you would follow and believe
With faith like a child

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, And born of the virgin Mary, He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE COMMUNITY

OFFERING

Offerings can be given to one of the ushers before or after the service.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

Merciful Father,

We offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us - ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. God, the creator, +Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the comforter, bless you and keep you in eternal love. Amen.

SONG All the People Said Amen

You are not alone, if you are lonely
When you feel afraid, you’re not the only
We are all the same, in need of mercy
To be forgiven and be free, it’s all you got to lean on but thank God it’s all you need

And all the people said Amen oh---and all the people said Amen
Give thanks to the Lord, for His love never ends, and all the people said Amen

If you’re rich or poor, well it don’t matter
Weak or strong, you know love Is what we’re after
We’re all broken, but we’re all in this together
God knows we stumble and fall, and He so loved the world He sent His Son to save us all

And all the people said Amen oh---and all the people said Amen
Give thanks to the Lord, for His love never ends, and all the people said Amen

Blessed are the poor in spirit who are torn apart
Blessed are the persecuted and the pure in heart
Blessed are the people hungry for another start
For theirs is the Kingdom, the Kingdom of God

And all the people said Amen oh---and all the people said Amen
Give thanks to the Lord, for His love never ends, and all the people said Amen

And all the people said Amen oh---and all the people said Amen
Give thanks to the Lord, for His love never ends, and all the people said Ame
n

And all the people said Amen, and all the people said Amen
