Message From Pastor Gorden

Each year the church calendar sets aside 40 days (plus Sundays) to hear again the story of the last week of Jesus’ life. This Season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Holy Week. For centuries Lent has been a time of humility, repentance, self-denial, and soul searching as one draws closer to the Passion of Christ. Various churches have developed different traditions to observe the Lenten Season, and many individuals observe Lent by making it a time of self-sacrifice or renewed spiritual discipline. At St. Paul’s we continue the tradition of having additional weekly worship services on Wednesday evenings.

Easter is April 5th this year so Lent begins until February 18th. That day we will have our traditional Ash Wednesday worship services with Holy Communion, along with the Imposition of Ashes. Services will be at 5:30 and 7PM. A lenten supper will be served at 6PM each night. Different serving groups provide the meals.

This year we are using The Jesus Creed by Scot McKnight for our meditations. Each family will be given a Lenten Devotional, 40 days Living the Jesus Creed. I encourage you to use this journal for a family devotional throughout Lent. Please join us for our weekly services to explore the concept of Loving God and Loving Others. Jesus felt very strongly about his followers to do these basic things in fulfilling their relationship to the Father.

The themes and texts for each week are as follows:

WEEK ONE: “Loving God and Loving Others” Mark 12:28-34

WEEK TWO: “Do You Need a New Beginning” Luke 19:1-10

WEEK THREE: “What Has God Called You to Become” Matthew 1:18-25

WEEK FOUR: “How is God Calling You to Compassion?” Luke7:11-16

WEEK FIVE: “Living the Jesus Creed” Luke 10:38-42

Join us each Wednesday evening for worship, fellowship, and a meal as we take time to remember the week that Jesus suffered and died for the forgiveness of our sins.
