This summer while traveling I realized how special events help to create our story as a family. The chronology of our story is pasted together by many events in life to include vacations. It occurred to me that as people of faith we share in a story as well. This story is about God’s family and all the events which have happened over the centuries. The Bible gives us a significant overview of the history of God’s people. We have to bridge the gap in history to connect this story to the present time. The story of God’s people is a rich story which involves many people. As we read this story we are reminded of the many people God has blessed.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1,2)

This is a great verse that reminds us of all who have gone before who have helped to shape and mold our faith. We look to Jesus to guide our journey here on earth, finding our way by learning about the stories of those faithful saints or “witnesses.” We find many of these faithful witnesses in Bible stories. We also learn of Jesus and his sacrifice for us, which promises eternal life to those who believe.

This year we will all have an opportunity to read the Bible in a new and fresh way. The Story is a book edited by Max Lucado and Randy Frazee that contains an arrangement of almost all the important stories of the Bible in chronological order. There are thirty-one chapters and in those chapters the entire stories of the Bible are told. You will read from Genesis, the beginning of the story, all the way through to the New Testament.

So far there are twelve groups, which will begin meeting in early October. These will be small groups which will allow us to learn more about the Bible, but also get acquainted with more people in our church family. The purpose of the small groups is to build a community centered in Christ. The early church described by Luke in the book of Acts did this very same thing to grow and be nurtured in the faith in a setting of Christian Fellowship.

Groups will meet in homes, or at church, at a restaurant or maybe at the workplace. Groups are free to meet weekly or monthly. Leaders will provide introduction and study guides if needed. By reading a few pages a day you will be able to read The Story by next summer.

On Round-UP Sunday, September 22 there will be a board with all of the groups so you can sign-up for the one that fits your schedule. If you have any questions please talk to Pastor Leon or Pastor Gorden after church.

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect our stories today with the stories of the Bible. We are part of God’s amazing story. Thanks for your willingness to share in this journey.

A friend in Christ,

Pastor Gorden
