Thanks to St. Paul’s Lutheran for the privilege of representing our congregation at the 16th Annual Gathering of LCMC congregations. Some highlights of the event included:
• Meeting with some of the over 800 delegates, representing 744 congregations from all over the U.S. and another 189 congregations internationally, 102 in India alone. There was even a representative there from Myanmar (Burma).
• Participating in an exciting Bible study on the Act of the Apostles led by Rev. Janine Rew-Werling of Hosanna Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.
• Meeting and getting to know the six (yes, only 6!) members of the LCMC staff who packed the three day schedule with five great keynote speakers and 31 breakout sessions to learn more about missions, church government, and how God is using the LCMC to change His church.
• A service project coordinating over 800 people to assemble 8200 hygiene kits (consisting of a bath towel, two bars of soap, a comb, a toothbrush and a nail clipper) for Lutheran World Relief in a record time of 57 minutes, after which we were rewarded with Fair Trade chocolate bars.
• A business meeting which lasted only 45 minutes, including elections of three new trustees. The bottom line of the financials found our organization with almost $300,000 in the bank at the end of 2015 after disbursing over $1,137,000, of which $971,000 went directly to missions. The highest paid staff person made just $62,000. There is complete transparency in the books.
• LCMC has planted 63 new congregations in the last three years and there is great excitement for our continued growth.
• Getting the shivers when we sang the table grace, chosen by a shout out at each meal. 800 people sang Be Present At Our Table Lord, the Doxology, or The Lord Is Good to Me (the Johnny Appleseed song) a capella in four part harmony. We took up a collection for our servers, employed by the Crown Plaza Hotel, which came to $3200, a pretty nice tip for great service.
• Meeting the many partners, vendors and mission organizations who showcased their work, ranging from seminaries and Christian colleges to artists like Ruth Hanson, the sister-in-law of one of our members. Johan Hinderlie, along with his wife Sonja (Rikka’s sister) were also there en costume as Martin and Katie Luther.
Pastor Leon Stier, Board President Bruce Duley, and I had a great experience in seeing what God is doing in our denomination. We at St. Paul’s are soon to be blest to be having our Service Coordinator Mark Vander Tuig visit us November 11-13 for a visioning weekend. This will allow the rest of the St. Paul’s family to find new ways to be a blessing in the body of Christ. The Gathering next year will be in Minneapolis, so we all can go!

In His service, John Nelson
