News

Sunday morning Bible Study (9:15 AM) and the Wednesday morning Bible Study (10:00 AM.) will be using as a resource the FAITH LESSONS from the “That All the World May Know” film series.

These films have been produced over the last several years by Focus on the Family and are led by Bible scholar Ray VanderLaan. Each lesson is filmed on location at a site in the Holy Land. There, VanderLaan leads a study on a Bible story that took place at that site, or, on a passage that refers to that location. He then applies the lesson to our lives today. These films have been very well received in the thousands of congregations in which they have been used, and it is hoped that we also may find them interesting and inspiring in our studies.

Rock N Roll of Ages Bible Study:  In Acts 17, Paul is proclaiming the Gospel to some Greek philosophers in the marketplace in Athens. As he is making his case for the truth of the Gospel, he quotes one of their own Athenian poets. Today, our best known poets are the songwriters. If we, like Paul, want to make the case for the Gospel in our culture, one good place to make a connection is through our popular music.
The music I am most familiar with is the classic rock of the 1960’s and 70’s. There was a lot of craziness in those times and in that music, but many of the tunes were so very good and are still popular. And as I now look back on the lyrics of those songs, I see that the words oftentimes reveal needs and longings that can be satisfied only by faith in Jesus Christ.
For a couple of hours on Saturday, March 17, I am going to teach a class called Rock (and Roll) of Ages. I will play some of those old songs, and then look at the words in light of our Christian faith. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
This will not be a music appreciation class. It will be primarily a Bible study, but it will be a ‘reverse’ Bible study. Instead of starting with a Biblical passage, I will begin each segment with a song. I will then look at what that song is saying or asking, and then work toward a Biblical response. Even if you aren’t into classic rock, our look at these songs will illustrate a way of listening to and thinking about any kind of music in light of our faith.
So... if you are feeling like you just “can’t get no satisfaction” and it seems like people are treating you like “nothin’ but a hound dog;” and if it looks as if there might be a “bad moon rising” in your life, this day might be just what you need to “soothe your soul” so you can start “feelin’ groovy” again. Come and “reminisce about the days of old with some old time rock and roll.” We will reflect on what the Bible says about the “Spirit in the sky” and why you “gotta have a friend in Jesus,” so that “when you die, and they lay you to rest, you can go to the place that’s the best.” In other words, the music will serve as a springboard into a look at what it means to believe in Jesus, both for now and for ever. (NOTE to youngsters: “words in italics” are lyrics from old songs.)
Hope to see you there!
